Exactly! Popsike only starts listing sales prices if they are around $20 (see their FAQ). So 95% or more of all sales don't leave any trace on Popsike. No wonder all these newbie ebay sellers think they've hit a goldmine once they dig up grandpa's or grandma's dusty post-ww2 pop 78rpm collection in an attic.

And don't forget that Popsike only record sales of a vaguely significant price, thus low prices aren't even registered. It all leads to skewing of prices to the most high extreme, fooling sellers into insisting on unreasonably high values in order to sell.

I've just added a valuation comment. When you look at popsike, you can see, first of all, that the record isn't all that rare, given how often it has come up for sale just on ebay in the last 2 years (3-times).

Secondly, typical VG+ copies went for between $22-29.

So the $51 that the database now lists for VG copies is purely a fantasy price, based on an algorithm that automatically assumes that someone would pay only twice as much for a Near-Mint copy as for a VG copy. At least in this case, that's clearly not accurate. The successful bidder paid approximately four-times as much for the NM as for a typical VG copy, and a G copy would probably not bring in the $26 that the new valuation database now claims.

If the valuation is supposed to be actually useful / reliable, it should be possible to add more data so that the price can fluctuate and adapt to the additional data.

In addition, it seems misleading to call the Near-Mint price for this record the price for a "Normal Issue". For shellacs, NM is certainly not a typical condition.

There's a number of scenarios. The bidder didn't know the value of the record. The bidder was adamant about owning the record at any cost. Or the seller had someone shill bidding for him.

Ah but it takes two to tango as it were. Given that if bidder 1 paced a bid of $135, eBay would only have increased to existing bid by 50 cents, meaning that if it was at $17, it would have gone to $17.50. So -- this points to shilling or two people with a buy at any price attitude

Is this site now trying to supply the typically uninformed ebay seller with a justification for unrealistic prices?

That is certainly not the aim, but I very much fear it will be the outcome...

I like the valuation feature personally. I buy records from sellers on social media and it let's me know where to set my limit. You never really know what something will sell for on eBay.

Most of the actual $10-20 prices paid for this won't leave a trace online anywhere, not to mention the less than $1 that someone might pay for this on an estate sale. So this outlier number is unlikely to be brought down to more realistic levels. That makes me wonder about the usefulness of this valuation feature. Is this site now trying to supply the typically uninformed ebay seller with a justification for unrealistic prices?

But the problem with this "valuation" feature, is that it gives the "Value" at €93 which is completely unrealistic!

I can understand a somewhat higher value for this as it is from 1959, albeit February, and being close to the last Capitol 78 in Canada. It wasn't a 78 in the USA as far as I know. No doubt it sold in smaller quantities making a bit scarce. BUT -- Can$135 (about US$100) is way too much even for a completist of late 78s. Seems I didn't pay more than $10 or $20 for my copy. Looking over at popsike its seems that range -- and up to Can$30 is about right

And now, if you have a copy, you've got your work cut out to find another person that wants this record as much as the last! You'll be lucky to get $10

And then it's of course a "super-rare" record, as the seller says.(source)

Value of a supposed achieved sale at Christmas added. Seems high given that I presume the tracks are available on CD or LP. Must be someone with a 78player bidding against a Capitol completist bidding against a Kingston Trio completist.

This has to be close to being one the last Capitol 78s in Canada
