xiphophilos 18th Jul 2018		I was purely guessing based on the fact that Jeanie says that Harry taught her to play the banjo after they met in 1949 at the Mountain Music Festival in Asheville. I assume she didn't immediately start recording. The first dated record I can find was their Folkways LP from 1957. They probably started recording not too many years earlier.



driftinmatt 18th Jul 2018		xiphophilos, thanks for your input. I have talked to other scholars who also have no definitive date on this. 1950-1955 seems to be the possible range of years for this record. Can I ask how you reached your conclusion of ca. 1955? Thanks!



xiphophilos 4th Jul 2018		At least online there seems to be no more detailed info. Harry West was born in 1926 (source), and his wife, Jeanie, in 1933 (source 1), (source 2). Based on Harry and Jeanie West's own website, they started performing as a duo in 1949. Their first Folkways LP FA 2357 is from 1957 (liner notes). My guess is their Country Church recordings are from ca. 1955.
