Clearly he rolled with the punch as far as the name went. He was a competent blues man from the sound of it, and he took to the electric sound quickly and well. Nevertheless, it seems he settled for a short career as a recording artist, what you might call his "Fifteen minutes of fame", and faded from view. I hope he had a more satisfying career as a live performer.

Here's another record by Alex Thomas of the time on YouTube

with this comment:

Alex Thomas made his first recordings as the vocalist for the Paul Williams Sextet in Detroit in 1947. At that time he was known as "Muddy Water". After a slight name change he recorded four songs as "Muddy Walters" but only two were ever issued. It is not believed that he is Alex "Playboy" Thomas who recorded for Swing Time in the early 50's.

Perhaps we are both right PhilMH. Per Wikipedia, the soon to be Muddy Waters did record three times for two different labels by the end of 1947. None of those recordings saw the light of day, however, until 1948. If this had been "the" Muddy Waters, it would have been his debut recording and it would be thoroughly remembered as such. On a major label like Imperial, it would certainly not have gone undiscovered until now. I wonde how Alex Thomas felt about having his pseudonym pre-empted.

Not at all too soon, as Muddy Waters made his first recordings in 1946, but as it happens, this isn't him, but one Alex Thomas, according to BLUES RECORDS VOL. 2 (Record Information Services).

The vocal on Side B is credited to "Muddy Water". At least one discographer I know has jumped to the conclusion that this is Muddy Waters. I'm not the definitive expert on this, but I think this is too soon to be "the" Muddy Waters.
