Ha ha ! Here's another, I'm gonna get some stick here, I like Freddie's version better than Elvis', no bloody Jordanaires ! Best version by a country mile is Big Mama's, a really great record.

You're going to bite yourself with your tongue inserted that far into your cheek, Bill.

Surely Elvis based his version on Freddie Bell's cut

I stand corrected as to the N vs M initial. I would suggest that Johnny Otis' involvement may be that they borrowed his arrangement to do this record. I haven't heard it, so I can't say. I have heard Big Mama Thornton's Hound Dog , and I have heard Elvis's a million times. I can appreciate that Elvis was inspired by Big Mama, but I would never suggest that he copied her and I would not be able to think of any reason why Johnny Otis should have been credited on Elvis's records, since he was not a composer and they didn't use his arrangement.

Interestingly, the composer credits for "Hound Dog" include J. Otis (Johnny Otis), who had definitely not written the song but was responsible for the arrangement of "Big Mama" Thornton's original version on Peacock 1612. Other than on that record and on this one here, Otis was not credited on Elvis Presley's later hit version on RCA 20-6604 (47-6604).

Actually, M.Stoller (i.e. Mike Stoller), and not N as given.

The N. Stroller who appears as second composer on Hound Dog is, and should have been credited as, N. Stoller, the second half of the famous rock and roll song-writing team Leiber and Stoller. Hound Dog is, of course, probably their most famous composition thanks to its eventual and spectacular association with Elvis Presley. I'm sure they weren't as well-known then. They probably have people to keep this sort of thing from happening now.
