 The theory I read was that the reason for manufacturing discs that played outwards was that on a normal record which played inwards, the last minute was always the quietest. Here, the result was the opposite. Can't vouch for how much truth there is in that theory, though.

 I doubt it. Pathe are supposed to have started manufacturing discs about 1906, and the Berliner patents had expired by then (patents only lasted 14 years). That's why the explosion in independent labels for discs and cylinders started 1903/4.

 Was playing outwards (a) a means of avoiding Berliner patents? (on discs and reproducers) - I understand that synchronised discs on early 'talking movies' also played outwards ,was this due to Pathe having used that method for audio discs and their association with film newsreels and so on?
