Joe Morris was a jazz trumpeter and arranger who had worked with Dizzy Gillespie but left in 1946 to start his own orchestra, which featured, among others, Johnny Griffin, Elmo Hope, Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones. "Anytime, Any Place, Anywhere", featuring the vocals of Laurie Tate, became Atlantic's first #1 R&B record in Nov 1950. It also became the label's first 45 rpm single in Jan 1951.
