I've been off site for a while. My apologies to vocalion red for not responding earlier. I have been a researcher in this area for over forty years and I still learn new things. There are still, and probably always will be, some who know more than I do about many areas. I try to help those who do not have my experience to learn what will help them understand the items they have. Others help me.

In my opinion, your copy of 9185 is correctly identified as an alternate version of 9185. The labels are both intended to go with this disc and they apparently match the music that is on the disc. Thus, it is not "wrong' so much as something different the company decided to do. I correspond frequently with Ty Settlemeier and will eventually pass on this item to him as suggested. He is swamped more than you can possibly know by his ambitious project, so I can't say when it will appear online. You just have to keep the faith! For the moment, it is adequately reported here, and that is an improvement over not reported.

I agree with the Library of Congress's notion that the unusual Victor you have is probably not an alternate pairing (although Victor did a fair amount of that, usually by substituting a new version of the same song by a different artist on later pressings) but more likely an all-around mistake, with two sides and their corresponding labels from two unrelated but numerically consecutive discs on the same disc. It might have been done on purpose (i.e. some kind of test pressing, we'll probably never know for sure), but probably wasn't, and if it was, was probably not meant to be released to the public. It could be unique, or there might be many examples extant. Either way, it is a genuine artifact and reporting its existence is an appropriate thing to do. Report what you know fully and accurately and you ought to be able to avoid "controversy". A little "controversy", however, is not always a bad thing, if by that you mean informed discussion about points on which people may legitimately differ. If we don't now and again provoke some of that, this site is not doing what it needs to do.

"Controversy" sometimes takes the form of harsh and unfair criticism. I don't blame anybody for wanting to avoid that. The best advice I can give there is to scrupulously present information with as much accuracy as you can and with the sources as fully identified as possible. Don't speculate if you don't have to. It's no sin to leave a space blank.Try not to read more into a source than is justified. Unhappy experiences often come from trying to "contribute" by passing on information from another source whose accuracy you can't confirm and whose identity you don't disclose. Let the actual sources take the hits. You did your job by reporting their input. Other unhappy experiences occur because the contributor fails to proofread his entry or to familiarize himself with the editorial protocols before submitting. Anyone who has a copy of the record involved and is willing to provide photos of it ought to be reasonably immune from undue criticism if they seek assistance from the moderators as needed in extracting the desired data and generating the appropriate photos.

Dear slholzer, all I can report concerning records I submit here, is either what I read on both sides of the labeling, and/or, what I can glean from sites like the Online Disco.Project. I am a novice at this kind of research. Some here at this site are far better than me at this. So, what I reported at my initial submission of this disc was how I saw it from both sources. I can attest to the fact that Mildred is in fact, singing on the B side. (Mp3 files for anything you see that I submit is available upon request, if in fact I ever recorded it, and I don't record absolutely every disc I have, but just send me a request, and an e-mail address, if I got it, I'll send it, and I know I have this one.)
Btw, any advanced Victor collector would know, (for an example), that on Victor # 17677, the A side should be "The Original Fox Trot" by the Van Eps Trio, and the B side should be "That Moaning Saxophone Rag" by Six Brown Brothers, right ? What would you think if you had a disc that had on side A, "The Original Fox Trot" and on side B...."Wailana Waltz" (Drowsy Waters) by Pale K. Lua and David Kaili , with a different catalog # 17767 ? I know what the Library Of Congress said to me. That it was most likely a mis-pressing and/or a mis-labeling. I have never recorded both sides of this particular disc. But one day I will, and know for sure. I know what everything should sound like. I was thinking to submit THIS disc here, but any possible controversy stopped me from doing so. At least for now. :-) Oh, yeah , I strongly suspected that Jan was a him, all along, and if you wish to inform Mr. Settlemeier about this variant, you have my permission to do so. All the information you need is already at 45 Worlds.

Original, earlier comment by vocalion_red (moved here from the Notes):
According to the "online 78rpm discographical project", Mildred Bailey should not be on this disc. Her next catalog # of release was # 9215, titled "'Taint What You Do". According to that site, "Can't Get You Outa My Mind", by Jan Garber, should be on the B side of # 9185.

For the record, Jan Garber is not a her but a him.

Also, for the record, are you telling us that Mildred Bailey is not on this disc but her label is, or that she is on the disc, even though she shouldn't be? We have all had discs that were mislabelled, and we know they are because the song that plays doesn't match the label. Such things are clearly accidental, i.e. "wrong". When the label bears the same catalog number on both sides (it does here) and the songs described are the songs that play (I'm guessing yes, but you can tell me for sure), then it is unlikely that it occurred by accident and the "wrong" label is more properly labelled an "alternative pairing". What appears in Ty Settlemeier's lists at the Online Discographical Project represents what he and his correspondents have seen or had reported to them from various sources. It infers that the item more likely than not exists as listed, but you should not jump to the conclusion that any variant of the item that is not listed is therefore "wrong". The only correct inference from it not being listed is that Ty has not yet encountered it. I'm sure he'd like to know about the variant you have found and to make the appropriate changes to his list.
