Question : Why is there a need to have 4 images of the same record. Is one record a label variant. It doesn't look like one. Just sayin'.
-----
Mod edit: No need, most recent set of labels hidden.

Hi Excello-2101, the problem is that for now the mods cannot edit (or correct) the lines "Uploaded By: ..." or "Edited By ..." on the Image Data, but the line "Description". So even if I agreed with you, I could not do your requested changes.

I can address the topic on the mod board though, so the admins may decide what to do.

Thanks again for the reply, fixbutte.

Rather than continuing to beat the deletion dead horse, I just have
one suggestion, which you can take with however many grains of
salt you wish.

On the Amos Milburn edited upload, only the moderators can approve
the edits, and only the moderators can replace the default setting, so
why would it not be correct to change the "Uploaded By" name to
reflect the person who actually uploaded the label, and place the
member's name who edited the scan in the description. Just seems
like the right thing to do, and I don't agree that it is obvious who
did what. People just look to see who uploaded a label, and
don't compare labels to see if it is the same as another one.

In fact, you guys do have a "Hidden" feature don't you, same as
45cat? If you do, then there should never be two of the same
label, with the same variation on a page. The lesser quality one
should be hidden. If you did that, then it would look like you
are the uploader of that Milburn label, and someone would have
to click on the "Hidden" link to see 55bluesman's original.

Alright, I'm done beating both of these dead horses now. I'm
going to grab something for a headache. /;-)

Actually the mods can compare the original image and the edited (e.g. cropped) image before they approve an edit, but if the images look very similar, the mods won't possibly notice that they come from different sources. Incidentally, some other misguided edits have been rejected in the meantime.

Re my example (the Amos Milburn record): If I want to have an additional upgraded image instead of replacing an existing one ("Edit Images"), I have to upload it myself ("Add Image"). Thus the current description, preset by the system, is correct. I could have given a more precise description like "A Side Label (edited from an original upload of 55bluesman)", but as everybody can understand this from the present images and their numbers, I refrained from doing so.

You can't expect us mods to know that you've replaced an image with another if you've submitted it as an edit. Please submit all new images using the Add Image link at the bottom of the page of the record.

The criteria for label images is 'earliest first' where earliest means the earliest issue of the label. So a better scan of a later label will not be 'promoted' to the main image.

 Thanks for the reply, fixbutte.

It may seem as though I'm nitpicking about an inferior label scan being deleted, but it is about much more than that. Let me try to explain.

The goal of this site is to try and get as many owners of 78rpm records to upload to the site as possible. The more people who upload scans to this site, the better the site is for everyone. Yeah, I know, I'm being Captain Obvious, but there's a reason.

If a member spends the time and energy that it takes to upload scans to this site, even if the label is marked and stickered up, or even if the scans are not of super quality, that member feels a sense of accomplishment. Since nobody is getting paid for doing these scans, that sense of accomplishment is pretty much all we have.

So then you take LaurenceD's scans, which he took some time scanning and uploading, and you make them disappear, what is his incentive to do the work to upload another record?

Even in your example, fixbutte, of the Amos Milburn record. When you did your gamma correction, or whatever, to the scan that was uploaded by 55bluesman, it now says that you uploaded the scan, when the credit should still go to 55bluesman. Where it says "Uploaded By: fixbutte", it should say "Uploaded By: 55bluesman", and where it says "Description" it should read "A side edited by fixbutte". That would be the correct way to handle this. That way the people who did the original scans, and the original work, will get proper credit for their work. Otherwise I can see members just throwing up their hands and saying screw this, other people are deleting my scans or taking credit for my work, I'm outta here.

That's not what the site wants or needs.

I don't know why the original images have been replaced but the replacement was actually approved by a mod.

I agree that images of a record should not be replaced if they have been properly cropped. Even if an original image is subpar, e.g. obviously underexposed, it should be kept and at best be displaced as the main image (as I did here).

 Thanks for the reply, RadnaNotions.

I did notice that LaurenceD's scans had been edited (replaced). That brings up two points.

First, I didn't think a member could edit a scan put up by another member without a moderator's approval. Which leads to the second point...

If a member can replace another member's scans, it would act as a disincentive to add scans to this site at all, knowing that another member can, at will, take them out. As all of the members here know, it is quite a chore to create a decent set of scans to upload here. No one's scans should be taken off without really good cause, and only then by a moderator. Hidden, yes, if a better copy comes along, but deleted, no.

LaurenceD's scans indicate they've been "edited" by DJA1969. I guess they weren't so much edited as replaced.

As of this writing, all four of the scans on this page are of the same record.

If, as DJA1969 says, his labels are cleaner, then where are LaurenceD scans?? They should be hidden but still available to view, no??

If these are all LaurenceD's scans, then where are DJA1969's labels??
