Well, I know ONE thing: Phonograph records sure were expensive in those days!! $85 cents up 2 $1.50?!? I used 2 pay $0.79 cents 4 singles back in the early 1970s!! No wonder we presently own these 100 year old records - they were a luxury back then, and folks who could afford them took good care of them!! ☺

Now that we know what the label codes mean, I am really confused. Apparently, my copy, with IX (= Sept. 1919) on both sides, must be older after all than Ed's copy with IX on one, but JX on the other side, despite the fact that his labels bear the older design that still includes the 1901 patent date. Any explanation? Did Columbia have two pressing plants simultaneously at the time?

Your label variants, Ed, represent the earlier label design, Columbia's label sub-variety iii: 6 patents in 2 lines, used between ca. 1918-19, so they must be from the original 1919 release.
Interestingly, both sides have different letter codes: the A side shows IX; the B side, JX.

My labels, in contrast, are an example of label sub-variety iv: 5 patents in 2 lines, used between ca. 1919-1920, here both with the IX letter code. I assume that my copy is a very early repress.

(Label design info based on Mike Sherman & Kurt Nauck, "Note The Notes: An Illustrated History of the Columbia Record Label 1901-1958," p. 28).

Since they are earlier, I've moved your labels to the front, Ed.
