JLC135 22nd Nov 2018		Label variant added from late '30s-early '40s.



Leedon 21st Mar 2018		Prior to 1948 all records sold in New Zealand were imports. Mostly from Australia or the UK. This one (along with the other one on the site) was definitely sold in New Zealand. Due to the fact that there were no pressing plants in NZ at the time, all local recordings were made in Australia. The record shop stickers on both are a from a book and record shop from Lyttleton, Christchurch. So the answer to the question is that they were sold in both Australia and New Zealand. Many of the Australian and English records on this site prior to 1956 when import restrictions started in New Zealand, were sold there. These Maori records are fairly common in New Zealand as they must have sold fairly well.

xiphophilos ● 2nd Nov 2017		JCL provided a link to The Daily News (Perth, WA) from October 9, 1929, page 10: Key sentence: "About a month ago Parlophone brought these two Maoris [the soprano Ana Hato and the baritone Deane Waretini] to Sydney and made a number of electrical records at the Homebush studio. The first of these are now available." He also commented: "I don't believe these were intended as exports, much like the 'special' Maori records Columbia put out a year later." I don't think that the date of the newspaper (Oct. 9) necessarily gives us the exact release date for this record. In fact. only 2800-2802 are listed by cat. nr. So I have removed the day above and just left the month unchanged.
