This here is the original entry, added some months ago. SeberHusky's recent duplicate entry (including his comment) has been merged to here.

Possibly a subject for an entire forum. In my opinion as a 40 year collector - repairing cracked and broken discs should be reserved for items that are so rare as to demand it. Playing a cracked disc is hard on your stylus and it will probably never be corrected to being equal to the unbroken original. And yes, you probably should be using the made for 78s sapphire stylus. The diamond stylus is probably configured for microgrooves, which means that when put into a standard 78 groove it will drop to the bottom and wallow around in the groove. Once again, hard on the stylus and not conducive to good playback. For best results, the stylus should be suspended between the two walls of the groove and not actually touching the bottom at all (unless you're playing an Edison, Grey Gull or other hill-and-dale type recording). That takes a broader, more rounded stylus tip, and the sapphire form provides that.

Scanning labels presents other problems. One guy I know has carved out a 78-sized gap in the cover and lip of his scanner where the edges project. If your scanner doesn't cease to function while the lid is up, you could simply not close the lid. Don't stare at the light, though. It's really bright and it could harm your eyes. If the lip is at all high, you might want to fashion some kind of soft support to rest the portion of the record that you're not scanning on. Corrugated cardboard or a stack of sheets of paper with a label-sized hole would work fine.

If it had been on the database, where did it go?

I dont advise scanning 78s to much- my scanner has a lip and lid can crack them beyond re-use.

I have played cracked 78s and there is a bit on the web where repair methods are shown / discussed.

Shouldn't you use a sapphire stylus?

I'm afraid I can't help you with your cracked shellac, SeberHusky. I just want to point out that this record had been on the database before, including the composer credits that you omitted. By now I have added more information to the record notes, as available from label images on the web. You may enter the label info from your own records in the same way.

My copy of this record has a small crack from center to rim. Anyone know how to fix if possible so it can play on a 1970's diamond-stylus Emerson player?
