You're welcome, JJ. You may have found the same information on Wikipedia though. On the other hand, Wikipedia may have lifted not only the label image of "Weed Smoker's Dream" from RYM (uploaded there by me in 2010).

It looks as though I might be indebted to you for the details I added below, FB! I don't normally visit RYM but a search might have taken me there.

I became interested in the succession of these titles as a result of adding the CD Single by Gramophonedzie

Lil Green died of pneumonia in 1954 at only 34, and not much is known of her today. However "Why Don't You Do Right?", her best known song and a big seller in 1941, has survived her well and can be found on many compilations. Big Bill Broonzy plays a fine guitar on this recording. The song was originally composed as "The Weed Smoker's Dream" by "Kansas" Joe McCoy with even some misogynistic content. In contrast the modified lyrics, in which the lady requests her partner to get off and leave her some money (as he apparently had done with a lot of other women before), can be seen as an early feminist anthem:
"You had plenty money, 1922
You let other women make a fool of you
Why don't you do right? like some other men do
Get out of here and get me some money too..."

Lil Green's version was later covered by Peggy Lee (with Benny Goodman) with great success (over 1 million copies sold), and then by Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, Sinéad O'Connor, and many others. The song was also performed by the cartoon character Jessica Rabbit (sung by actress Amy Irving) in the 1988 film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

Based on a song by Kansas Joe McCoy (Harlem Ham) "Weed Smoker's Dream" which he had recorded with brother Charlie as the Harlem Hamfats in 1936, Why Don't You Do Right? subsequently became an enduring hit when recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra with Peggy Lee in 1942
