Notes

Recorded May 28, 1942 in Hollywood, California
This disc is part of Album Set A57

Roy Acuff, vocals; Brother Oswald Kirby, dobro; Lonnie Wilson, guitar; Velma Williams, string bass

Banjo player Rachel Veach was at the session but does not play on these 2 sides. The Russell discography does not include Jess Easterday on mandolin and credits no mandolin, but the Praguefrank site does show Easterday - he certainly 'sounds' like he's in on the session.

Also issued in the U.S. on OKeh 6685, Columbia 37028, 37596 (in the U.S. album set), and 20195

A-side also issued in the U.S. on Columbia 52023

"Wreck on the Highway" was actually written by Dorsey Dixon of the Dixon Brothers, who recorded "I Didn't Hear Anybody Pray" for Bluebird in January 1938 (Bluebird B-7449, Montgomery Ward M-7489). After Acuff's record was released and was a hit, Dixon filed suit and won ownership and some royalties, although Acuff is usually credited as composer on subsequent releases too. I'll note also that "I Didn't Hear Nobody Pray" is based on an old negro spiritual (although there's no car crash in the spiritual) of the same name, first recorded by the Fisk University Jubilee Quartet (see Victor 16448 b-side) in 1909.

I've moved up your label. The version in which the catalog number is at the bottom of the label is the older one.
