 According to Universal Recording Corp.'s president Bill Putnam, the Universal Double Feature records were the first records offering four hits on two sides (interview). With the help of sound engineer Emery Crook's "QC" process, Universal was able to expand the running time of each side to five minutes (Billboard, Dec. 18, 1948, page 41). The first records in this series were issued on January 15, 1949 and sold through retail chains and discount stores like Woolworth's. The concept didn't immediately take off, though, although it was soon copied by other budget brands such as Vincent Puccio's Broadway Value in Los Angeles, Value Four Big Hit Tunes, Top Tunes, Gateway, Big 4 Hits and others.
