 According to Wikipedia and other sources, the correct last name of the composer of Poor People Of Paris is Monnot. Whoever was copying the label info that day was apparently having a bad one as the French name of the song is not La Gavalante de pauvre Jean but La Goualante de pauvre Jean. Of course, the English title was a misunderstanding to start with as someone misheard "Pauvre Jean" (translation: Poor John) as "pauvres gens" (translation: poor people), so I suppose that all this is just upholding tradition. I expect that somewhere a few Frenchmen had a good laugh about it.

 Les Baxter's version of "Poor People of Paris" was a number 1 hit in 1956 (source); so this cover version must also be from 1956.
