Marie Benson appears to have still been working into at least March 1953, so I expect she is on this record.

The Ballad Years by Don Wicks says the following:
"In August 1952 The Stargazers made their variety debut with a week at Chatham Empire followed by weeks at Shepherd’s Bush and Wood Green Empires. Most years they would do a short tour around London’s music halls and on the 1953 summer season their closing number always brought the house down. Instead of singing they reverted to their original musical roles with Cliff Adams on trombone (also piano) Ronnie Milne and Bob Brown on trumpets, Freddy Datchler on clarinet with Marie Benson (just back from having a baby - Jean Campbell deputized while she was away) playing ukulele. The curtain always came down to thunderous applause. Reviews said that in an already excellent act this was the cream on top, with the whole team praised for superb stage-craft and a special mention for Marie’s sense of fun."

So I'm wondering what the line-up was for this number 1 hit. If Marie Benson was pregnant in early 1953, she could have been replaced by Jean Campbell on the recording session? The recording was made on 6 January 1953, so perhaps Marie was still taking part in sessions at the time.

Good value for money since you got their version of another chart hit on the other side. Given how common it was to cover everyone else's songs, surprising there aren't more examples with 50s #1s.

Prior to the internet and eBay, this and the Stargazers' other #1 were known as hard-to-find on 78 for collectors.

I think he made a typo. I think he meant to say it reached number 1.

I just noticed the comment from Alan Warby says this reached number 11. In fact, it reached number one (the first British act to do so) in April, 1953.
