From what I can tell, the re-recorded version of this didn't actually get pressed on the UK 78. Presumably, it was just for radio and promotional use.

The first of Whitfield's two UK number ones, it spent two separate weeks at the top, five weeks apart.

I can confirm from my copy of Cronkey's images that the matrix no. is DR18138-1.

After the original issue, Decca got David to re-record the lyric the BBC had banned ("lord above" changed to "oh my love").

The first version was recorded at Decca Studios, West Hampstead on 23 September 1953 (matrix DR 18138-1)
The second version with revised lyrics was recorded on 27 October 1953 (matrix DR 18138-2)

Can anyone confirm which pressings they have? I'm curious to have it confirmed that both takes actually made it onto 78rpm releases.

It first made #1 on 7 November 1953, so the re-pressed version may have been in the shops by that point. It certainly would have been by the time it returned to the top on 12 December.
