It looks like Tollefson’s recording was made in London on 31 March 1947, and released that May in Norway with the Lørdagsvalsen title. Two years later, Columbia decided to release it in Britain and the United States as Black Masks. Perhaps with the delay, the Columbia people assumed Svarta Masken was an alternative title and used it instead. Makes sense, Black Masquerade Ball on Saturday? Novel name, increased sales?

In Scotland, the tune Lørdagsvalsen is widely known as Black Mask Waltz. Was Tollefson’s recording wildly popular there, or did someone else have a successful local recording of the song?

The composer of the music of "Lördagsvalsen" (Saturday Waltz) is Anselm Johansson, but the lyrics are by someone whose pseudonym was indeed "Svarta Masken" or "The Black Mask", namely Swedish lyricist Anna Myrberg (1878-1931).

Based on the catalog number, I've changed the year of release to 1947 instead of 1942; the Norwegian issue on Columbia GN 1007 was released in 1947 as well (see here). This record with a DT purchase tax code may be a 1948 repress. A DT purchase tax code existed not only from 1942-1943, but also from 9 April 1948 - 30 Dec. 1950.

Although it is placed exactly where the composer credit on the other side was placed, Svarta Masken looks suspiciously like another translation of Black Masks on Side B. Is it possible that the piece was named after a group that created it (a la Original Dixieland One Step, for instance)?
