NB: The A side artists correctly spell Fuzzy Owen and Bonnie Owens. They were neither married nor related. Bonnie Owens (born Bonnie Maureen Campbell) was actually married to Alvis Edgar Owens, Jr. aka Buck Owens at the time of the recording, and she would marry Merle Haggard in 1965. Charles “Fuzzy” Owen would become Merle Haggard’s longtime manager.

Although Jean Shepard and Ferlin Husky’s version was a big country hit in the summer of 1953 (six weeks at #1 on Billboard's C&W charts), this one here is the original version, written by Fuzzy Owen himself with Lewis Talley, and was released earlier in that year.

rockabillyhall.com gives the following discographical information:

FUZZY & BONNIE OWENS - Music by The Sun Valley Playboys
Bakersfield, CA: Late 1952/Early 1953

Fuzzy Owen (vcl/stg bs); Bonnie Owens (vcl); Bill Woods (ld gtr); poss. Buck Owens (ld gtr); Lewis Talley (rhy gtr); Producer: Billy Barton

MV-615AA/ A DEAR JOHN LETTER | Mar-Vel MV-615AA, Mar-Vel 45-MV-102-A, Grande GR-104A,
(Talley-Owen) (BMI)
....
MAR-VEL 615 released early 1953.
MAR-VEL 615B was recorded by GEORGE WILSON with Bill Lillpop’s Western Band - “TURKEY’S IN THE PEA PATCH”
NB(3): MAR-VEL 45-MV-102 released early 1953. ...
NB(5): GRANDE GR-104 released ???

This means that Wikipedia (in the article about Bonnie Owens), saying the original predates the cover version by three years (i.e. was released in 1950), is wrong again. (In the Wikipedia article about the song, the original version is not mentioned at all.)
