 I agree, Rust isn’t always accurate. I’ve found many discrepancies and omissions and questionable entries. Rust was, however, able to talk to many bandleaders and sidemen during his research. Granted, you are relying in many cases on their memory which may have lost accuracy over time. Some company ledgers were available to him. I seem to remember reading that when Rust met with Sam Lanin, he found Sam had kept very detailed notes on his many sessions.

 Could be, although Robert Stockdale doesn't list this session in either of his Dorsey bio-discographies, and Stephen Stroff doesn't mention it his book on Nichols, "Red Head". I can understand why modern discographers, like Bolig and Sutton, are skeptical of Rust and others that often based session participants on aural assessment. I'll repeat my comment that a potentially valuable (though not infallible) application of AI would be in training the technology to identify musicians on these old recordings for which personnel listings have either been lost to the ages or never existed in the first place. I don't know whether this would work, but it might be a fun project to work on.
