Thanks for that link, xiphophilos. I know what I'm going to be doing for the next couple hours.

Hugo Strötbaum has put together an amazing site with bios of early recording pioneers and some other people associated with the music business, mostly focusing on the years 1878 to 1940: http://www.recordingpioneers.com/rs_indexV.html

I would love to know more about the engineers working in the recording industry during its first 60 years, not only at Blue Note. Who were these unsung heros?

I read "pey." Admittedly, the upper half of the "e" is a bit faint under this light. In any case, that means that we have now detected three different signatures of recording engineers on Blue Note recordings from 1944:
• •
Me
pey.

Unfortunately, no one seems to know who they were. I've found numerous references to Rudy van Gelder, who worked for Blue Note between 1953 and 1967 and is credited with creating the "Blue Note sound," but nothing about any other engineers.

I added an image of a very small, difficult to read etching seen on both sides of my copy of this record. The image appears to read "pcy", but when I hold the record up to the light and tilt it slightly this actually looks more like "pcx". Does anybody recognize this? Runouts also show the backwards S (Ƨ), indicative of a Scranton pressing.
