Notes Record 1 of a 3-disc Album Set, but I do not have the pictured album binder itself Almanac Singers, "Songs for John Doe" Recorded late March to early April 1941, at a Central Park West studio, produced by Eric Bernay, released early May 1941 Pete Seeger, vocal and banjo; Lee Hays, vocal; Millard Lampell, vocal; Josh White, vocal and guitar; Sam Gary, vocal Wikipedia says - "Songs for John Doe" is the 1941 debut album and first released product of the Almanac Singers. The album was released in May 1941, when World War II was raging but the United States remained neutral and the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were still at peace. American Communists and "fellow travelers" including the Almanac Singers followed the anti-interventionist stance dictated by the Soviet Union, which accounts for the appearance of anti-war songs on the album; however, on June 22, 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the Almanac Singers began calling for U.S. intervention in Europe. "Songs for John Doe" was quickly pulled from distribution, and those who had already purchased copies were asked to return them. After the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor, the Almanacs went into the studio in February 1942 to record a set of songs supporting the American war effort which resulted in the 1942 album set "Dear Mr. President." Six masters were recorded in a 2- or 3-hour session. "'C' For Conscription" and "Washington Breakdown" were recorded as a single take. "Ballad of October 16th" uses the melody of the folk song "Jesse James." Images
