scrough 23rd Mar 2020		From Mike Thomas' Site re Beka label: ... a British factory was built for manufacturing Lindström-owned records, all of which had previously been manufactured in Germany. It was called The Mead Works, and was in Gas House Lane, Hertford and it opened in December 1912. By the time it was fully operational in March 1913, they report making 50,000 records a day (oh, yeah?). These would include not only Lindström's Beka, Coliseum & Scala records, but also Fonotipia's Jumbo and Odeon records, as Lindström had taken over the Fonotipia concern by this time. Despite the new factory in England, many Lindström-owned records were still made in Germany, where employment costs were lower.



Bamboo 12th Mar 2020		'A' and 'B' side label variations added. For example, record titles have different spacing / layout. Also, most interestingly, because of the comments / discussion below about the first up-loaded records being made in Germany, these variants state that they were made in England.

xiphophilos 23rd Jan 2020		Yes, just before World War 1 there was what M.G. Thomas calls an "invasion" of cheap German import discs to Britain. Scala records were produced by the Lindström A.G. in Berlin.(source)



scrough 23rd Jan 2020		From around 1907 until the 1914 War start, the UK market was flooded by cheap German made imports. These tended to cost around half the price of the normal UK produced records. So the big companies like HMV (with The Twin) and Columbia (with Cinch) actually started their own labels at similarly low prices, but without declaring they were involved.
