Against the order of matrix numbers, "Bess's Boogie" was the A-side of this record, see the Apollo Records ad in Cash Box, Jan 28, 1953, possibly helped by the fact that it was dedicated to the label owner and co-founder, Bess Berman.

Alto saxophonist Bobby Smith was a member of Erskine Hawkins' Orchestra, for which he had contributed "Tippin' In", a 1 R&B hit in 1945. This band here was a "spin-off project from the Erskine Hawkins big band, the Smith group consisting entirely of Hawkins band members. It wasn't a breakaway group as the musicians continued to play with and record with the parent big band while the small group acted as house band for Apollo Records of New York." (see Be Bop Wino). Bobby Smith was to remain with Hawkins until 1960.
