78 RPM Record
Notes Recorded June 30, 1944 at 503 Aldine Street, Chicago Red Nichols- coronet Jack Gardner-piano Vic Engle-drums 63144 1B- Cheerfull Little Earful ( misspelled on John’s ledger) is actually two takes, the first is Red working through his solo with the trio, :53 seconds. A pause and instruction from Red? to “Henry” ( Gardner’s middle name- which makes me think it’s Steiner’s voice, as Red did not know Gardner that intimately) - then a more complete take with Jack’s piano leading off. This take is slightly over two minutes. The following take 64044 3B was issued on SD 507. 63044 5B Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, the take used here, remains unissued. This was a happenstance gathering and the only time the three worked together Images Comments and Reviews
