xiphophilos 19th Feb 2017		The take info on mx. 3574 is indeed ambiguous. What I finally decided was that the B could also be an A (as in the 78discography) that was overstamped with a B. In either case, though, both take A & B are likely to have been recorded on the same day, so I don't think that defense of Rust's gaffe works. Interestingly, he dates nearby matrix numbers close to either Jan. 9 or Dec. 26, as far as I could see. I didn't spend enough time combing through Rust's book to see where the dates then split.
slholzer 19th Feb 2017		Both of Rust's dates are preceded by the "c.", which means that neither is intended to convey more than a range of possible dates. It is possible that the ranges overlap. Considering how close the numbers are, a day or two would be sufficient. I doubt that Rust was aware of the cognitive clash the two dates create. If he was, he never passed on an explanation or his resolution of it. There was no second edition of the Dance Band book, and the Lanin track didn't make the cut for Jazz Records. We'll probably never know now what led him to go one direction with one date and another with the other. There is no take number associated with Rust's entry for mx 3574. which suggests at least the possibility that a later take, made at a different session than the first attempts, was used. That could leap frog the recording date for mx 3574 over that for mx 3588, whose issued takes -B and -C were likely successfully recorded in one session. I hesitate to invoke the information from the runouts, as it is apparently ambiguous and tends to bring us back to square one if you use any kind of consistent interpretation. Moreover, it was Rust's usual habit to address issues like this, if he was aware of them, and he gives us no clue that there were unissued masters or previous sessions in this case. Thus, we are left to ponder what he may or may not have known, and what it all means now.

xiphophilos 18th Feb 2017		Brian Rust (American Dance Band Records, p. 1063 and p. 1257) and the 78discography with him claim that the song with the lower matrix number was recorded two weeks later than the one with the higher matrix number. I find that a bit strange, but have listed the data as they give them.
