Images 1496290 and 1496291, with VICTOR on the side of the trademark's gramophone and the price listed to the left of the spindle hole as "$1 in U.S.A.", represent the first version of the Victor Batwing label, in use between 1914-1916. Versions without price notice are from 1918-1926.

This particular record first appeared in December 1914.

The blue labels were originally reserved for opera recordings made abroad, and later expanded to include all kinds of premium artists for whom Victor could demand a slightly higher price ($1 instead of the usual $0.75 for the black series). Here two anonymous German birds, a trush and a nightingale, are treated on a par with well-known performers.

I have a variant version of this label in my database. Both versions are blue Batwing style labels. By comparison to the fairly wordy illustrated artist credit, the other version says only "By A Bird in the Reich Aviary". Where the illustrated version describes the title as "Bird Song", the other says "Actual Bird Song". Lastly, the variant version does not have the "$1 in the U.S.A." legend seen at the 9 o'clock position of the illustrated version.
