The Savannah Syncopators are a pseudonym on this disc for Joe "King" Oliver's Dixie Syncopators. For those who are new to jazz, especially that brand of jazz known to enthusiasts as "hot" jazz, "King" Oliver was the widely acknowledged top dog of the New Orleans jazz community, assuming his mantle after the previous "King", Buddy Bolden, suffered a psychotic break event during a parade and was committed to an asylum. Oliver eventually came to Chicago, where he was equally venerated, at least by musicians. It was Oliver who brought Louis Armstrong from New Orleans to be second cornet in his Chicago band and mentored him until he inevitably eclipsed even the "King" himself.
