Here's the lively flipside, the spiritual "Ain't You Glad", with Sonny Terry's strong harmonica accompaniment:

As said in the liner notes of the Songs By Lead Belly album (of which this record here was a part) in 1943, "Irene" was the theme song of Lead Belly, born Huddie Ledbetter, and this version was the only recorded one then. It was the first commercial recording anyway, as Lead Belly had been performing the song, best known as "Goodnight Irene", since 1908, and some of these performances had been recorded before (first in 1933, by folklorists John and Alan Lomax in the Louisiana State Penitentiary, where Lead Belly served time). Very popular in the coffee-house circuit, mainly in New York, but not commercially successful during Lead Belly's lifetime, the song became a million-selling #1 pop hit only a few months after his death (on December 6, 1949), in a "prettied up" version sung by The Weavers with Gordon Jenkins and His Orchestra (Decca 27077, June 1950). The original Asch recording was then reissued on the Atlantic label (now titled "Goodnight Irene", and artist spelled Leadbelly, Atlantic 917, Aug 1950).

Here's a documentation of all known Leadbelly recordings of "(Goodnight) Irene", as found on Keep On Living:

* Actually, there were two takes of "Irene" recorded (SC 261 and SC 261-1), in different keys and with differing lyrics. The alternative take (SC 261-1) has also Sonny Terry on the harmonica, but the released take, as heard on the YouTube video, is Lead Belly on guitar and vocal alone.
