I agree with slholzer and xiphophilos, for the most part. I do not feel that it is stealing information. The information is put there for public use. I have in the past sent corrections in to the ODP and it took a real long time for them to correct it (I mean, like 2 and 1/2 years-yes, 2 and 1/2 years), and some errors were not corrected to this day. I use the ODP a lot, as sometimes they are my only resource. I have no complaints or issues with ODP and the information they provide. They had to get the information from hundreds of resources and combine it into one website. Transcription errors are common. Information on a lot of records is sketchy at best.
The disc which ODP erroneously listed at Capitol 463 (Merle Travis - Spoonin' Moon/Too Much Sugar) corresponds to Capitol 1146 which is also in the ODP.
I agree, the ODP is a great achievement, despite the occasional inaccuracy. I admit I haven't taken the time to send them corrections requests myself in the past. Apparently, the site is still active, though, and so it would be worth bringing errors to their notice.
Lest we get too full of ourselves, we should remember that the ODP is actually more complete than this website (or any other website you care to name). In spite of rapid growth, it will take this website years to achieve the level of completeness that Ty Settlemeier has at ODP, if, in fact, it ever does.
We should also bear in mind that no website is 100% accurate, including this one. The moderators surely must have noticed that lately we've been getting a lot more submissions that are not entirely up to the standard we would like to see for reliability. Missing catalog numbers, entries for just one side of the record, etc. A few years of this and people will be saying just exactly what you said about the ODP, but about us.
If it seems like I'm a little pissed, it's because I am. People steal from the ODP all the time on this site and they virtually never acknowledge where they got the data. But let them come up against a single example of incorrect or missing data and they rush to trumpet the ODP's failing to the world. I wonder how many of those people trouble to contact Ty Settlemeier and help him fix it? It's kind of raw treatment for somebody who established the first 78 rpm database to survive its infancy and thrive, who has stuck with it for years and who has relentlessly sought to make the ODP both bigger and better for the benefit of all of us.
I can't help but wonder how those of you whose errors I've edited in the past few years would have felt if I had opted to rub your faces publicly in them instead of just fixing them. That kind of behavior is counter-productive. It's hurtful and divisive and utterly mean-spirited. I would like to think that we all want better than that.
ODP lists an entirely different title and artist for this record. After some research, I believe that either the odp info is wrong on this catalogue no., or a second record with the same catalogue no. exists, but I have not been able to find the record listed in the ODP. Someone may correct me if I am wrong.
