What's the point of 'export format'?? Often it's because they weren't issued in the country they were pressed in but we don't know which country they were intended for. And to extend that further, some 78s were pressed for distribution in many countries (example HMV DA 100 - 4000 series). The Columbia FB series is defined as 'British', but then we find examples like this one, pressed in Holland. Although it may have been sold in Holland, it was probably intended for sale in many European countries, and so should be classified as export.
But when 'export' is intended for a particular country, that's where it should be listed. That's how I interpret "First choose the country the 78 is from", in this case Australia, so Xipho has made the right decision in my opinion.
To quote the 45worlds site itself, "First choose the country the 78 is from". They are from UK and USA. What's the point of having an Export format? That's what they are. Are you going to change all the other export labels over to Australia as well? I thought 45worlds was meant to be a place for accurate discographication?
If I may quote one of the Admins of this site, Dr. Doom (Forum post on Countries, 7th Jan. 2013): "The country of manufacture isn't the important bit. It's the country of release." In 2012, he similarly said: "Country of manufacture is irrelevant for deciding which region to choose." (source)
I've reattributed all Bon Marché's, including this release, from the UK and USA over to Australia because, as both M.G. Thomas and JCL135 say, this series was produced for and sold solely in Australia.
Based on all the other recordings by Adrian Schubert's Salon Orchestra that we have in the database, my guess would be that this record dates to 1928 or 1929.
Neither of these sides appears in Rust's American Dance Band Discography under Adrian Schubert's Salon Orchestra, but if I read the mx number on Side A correctly (6544?), the side fits between a single side (The Merry Widow, mx 6543) recorded c. April 3, 1926, and another single side (Tenderly, mx 6547) recorded c. April 5, 1926, both issued on US ARC labels. I suspect that if the mx for side B were not covered by a stamp, we would find that it too fits in this convenient gap in the discographical record.
Given that this record was made in the US but almost certainly was exported exclusively for distribution in Australia, I wonder if it ought properly be classified as an Australian label? Does anybody know if they made any domestic recordings in Oz?
