Is the 'composer' here the later famous theatrical and TV impressario Val Parnell? The dates would match up - he would have been in his mid-20s at this time.

You are absolutely right. It would have been difficult to record the real events with the kind of primitive recording technology people had in 1915, basically a gigantic funnel into which everyone had to speak, sing, or play. Instead, record companies came up with these so-called "Descriptives," reenactions of important events that must have been quite popular back then.

Here are a few examples:

Landing Of The British Army In France, Winner 2703 (1914)

Luigi Baldassare, Un Episodio Dell' Invasione Tedesca Nel Belgio [=An Episode from the German Invasion of Belgium] / Un Visitatore Misterioso Al Quartier Generale Del Kaiser [= A Mysterious Visitor At the General Headquarters of the Kaiser] on Columbia E2621 (1915)

Colantuoni, La Presa Di Monte Nero [= The Conquest of Monte Nero] / Gli Ultimi Giorni Di Gorizia Austriaca [= The Last Days Of Austrian Gorizia] (1916) on Columbia E2829

In no way is this a recording of actual events. It is clearly a staged propaganda mix of dialogue and patriotic songs. The date given is approximate and in sequence with previous submissions but it could be earlier.
