| | I think Artiphon is another of those labels pressed in Germany for a British company, using British masters and intended for distribution in England. The debate that was recently started elsewhere on this site about whether such labels should be classed as German from their site of manufacture or according to the country where they were recorded and sold might locically affect how this and other Artiphons are indexed. |

| | Thanks - C 27 D is March(C) 27th 1922(D). The 8 8 22 might be another similar date too (8 August 1922)! Looks like your record is a 1922 release, so I've added the year. |

| | Thank you, Scrough, very much for taking the time to comment. Codes on the run-out 4003, C 27 D, A 8 8 22 (which could be a date); 4004, C 27 D, A 8 8 22 |

| | Many of these records have a date code in the run-out, although nobody knows exactly what the date refers to. Have a look at the tables on the page that Xip gave earlier. It might give you a better idea of the approximate date of your record. The label was active 1919 - 1932. |

| | Too bad there seems to be no version of this recording online. The song on the B side, "Ceann Dubh Dilis" (My Sweet, Dark-Haired Love), is a very old Irish love song, going back to the 18th century; Gaelic lyrics and English translation can be found here:

| | Artiphon regularly used its matrix numbers as catalog numbers so that each record has two numbers; only in early 1931, shortly before they went bankrupt, did they introduce order numbers.
Based on the label, this record is from the early 1920s. An image of the same label design, Artiphon 8164 with a recording of Carmen and Italian text can be found here.
Christian Zwarg has assembled an Artiphon Discography (downloadable Excel database), but it does not contain this record or any others from the 4000 series. |
