Wann fängt denn bloß das schöne Leben für mich an? Ach, mir bleibt in trüben Tagen nur dann und wann ein kleiner Schimmer des Lichts. Wenn ich Sonntags in mein Kino geh' und im Film die feinen Leute seh', denk' ich immer wieder: Könnt' ich mal, ach könnt' ich mal genauso glücklich sein! Alle Tage Sekt und Kaviar und ein Auto und ein Schloß sogar, so 'was wünsch' ich mir schon lang in meinen kühnsten Träumerein. Auf dem Fünfundsiebzig-Pfennig-Platz sehn' ich mich nach einem süßen Schatz, der genauso wie im Film am Schluß mich glücklich machen muß. Wenn ich Sonntags in mein Kino geh' und im Film die feinen Leute seh', träum' ich noch am Montag früh: Einmal leben so wie die – doch zu so 'was kommt man nie! English translation (which can't compare, of course, to Robert Gilbert's incredibly charming and witty German lyrics): Grey is the week I'm facing on Monday. The next week too is just as lame. Life is hardly any fun. When will life ever start to be good for me? Alas, in gloomy days the only thing left for me is once in a while a little glimmer of light. When I go to the cinema on Sundays and see high society in the movies, I always think: Oh, if only I could ever, ever be as happy as them. Every day champagne and caviar, and a car and even a castle! I've long wished for something like this in my boldest dreams. On my 75-cent seat I yearn for a darling who, just as at the film's end, must make me happy. In the film, this song is also repeatedly performed by the Comedian Harmonists. While I was looking if I could find the lyrics anywhere, I ran across an excellent article by Christian Rogowski on the movie "Ich bei Tag und du bei Nacht" and its music that I highly recommend: "Strange Bedfellows: The Politics of Sound in Ludwig Berger's "Ich bei Tag und du bei Nacht" (1932)" in Colloquia Germanica 44.3, Themenheft: Early Sound Cinema in the Late Weimar Republic, edd. John E. Davidson and Theodore F. Rippey (2011), pp. 331-348. The article is at times just as funny as the movie (available here), and it does a great job elucidating the clever ways in which the movie plays with the themes addressed in the song, taking a stance for liberal democracy in the face of the Nazi threat (the Nazis had just become the largest party in the Weimar parliament).
