..or an artist is rushed into the studio in the middle of a tour to record the hot new tune..and an older archived recording is used for the B side
Noticed that lots of US Mercury discs have no indication of which is the top side...I guess that when Billboard reviewed them they must have been marked somehow

Exactly. In most cases, lower matrix numbers indicated what was recorded first, and not necessarily an indicator of what was a designated "A" side. I've actually seen cases on 45cat where promo 45's designated A sides' matrix numbers were higher than the "flip." It all came down to which side was recorded first.

Since when was "Just An Old Fashioned Girl" a B-side???????????????????? How stupid.
The argument is always - "Look at the earlier matrix number". I had this dispute with a DJ at Liskeard Radio, regarding Brian Poole & the Tremeloes "Candy Man". The silly man. I sent him a screenshot of 45cat. where, lo and behold, there is a Big 'A' demo.!!!!!!!!!
Matrix nos. are not necessarily an indication of 'A' and 'B' for goodness sake.
(And the embossed tax code can be on either side. Just machinery.)
