xiphophilos 25th Feb 2018		"Dark Eyes" has no composer credits here because it is often thought to be a traditional Russian/Ukrainian folk song. It was originally a poem by Ukrainian poet Yevhen Hrebinka, first published under the Russian title "Очи чёрные" (Ochi chyornye) in the author's own Russian translation in Literaturnaya Gazeta on January 17, 1843. Apparently, it was put to music twice; first the melody of Florian Hermann's "Valse Hommage" was used. In addition, the Wikipedia entry on the song claims that there is a later melody composed by Italian-born British composer Adalgiso Ferraris (sheet music (1932)), and that it is that one that was picked up and recorded by Al Bowlly and other British dance bands in the 1930s. I myself have checked out a number of different versions now, but they all seem to use the same melody. So I wonder if what Ferraris copyrighted in 1932 was simply his arrangement of the song.
