very approximately one to two thousand copies imported by thorpe & porter and distributed in the yuk-of-gb (?'n'norniron?) bearing a small blue teepee 1/9d price label with the figure "2" on the line-drawn teepee - i do not know whether this indicates the month of distribution.

publisher, new cat#/cover price are printed in black upon a white (i.e. uncoloured) rectangle cut out of the elsewise identical second printing's cover, immediately below the pyramid logo, where this information for that earlier printing was previously situated.

front cover is very close to that of the first edition, but publisher, (new) cat#, (new) price & logo are moved next to spine, running upwards towards top edge, allowing the title to be moved up to run across the top of the cover, with harlan ellison's name also moved up; the blurb between those & after his name are changed to read "seven times winner of the/hugo and nebula awards" and "fantastic science fiction stories that/defy belief introduced by theodore sturgeon" respectively.

"maxwell grant" is a house name created by walter b. gibson at the publishers, street & smith's request, to be used by all the authors writing "the shadow" stories for their eponymous periodical.
aside of two hundred and eighty-two stories by gibson, himself, the name was used by lester dent on one 1938 story, "the golden vulture", bruce elliott on fifteen 1946-48 stories, and by theodore tinsley on twenty-seven 1936-1943 stories; and further, by dennis lynds on nine original paperback novels 1964-1967.

the fictional author was "unmasked" in a much later comic as a newspaper reporter who, on discovering the shadow's true identity, chose not to publicise this, but instead to chronicle his adventures.
