This book deals with the fact that steam engines were being scrapped as BR moved to Diesel and Electric. In the book you are told about a number of other Bluebell engines and another nasty Diesel appears.

Book No 19 - This book is a one off in the series as we are introduced to a brand new railway line, The Culdee Fell Mountain Railway, and to 6 new engines. Although only really 3 feature. Cudlee, Godred (who is destroyed in an accident) and Lord Harry / No.6 /Patrick. This is the only book this line is ever featured in.

Very Old Engines



Book No 20 - In this book Skarloey & Rheneas are 100 years old and we are transported back to the 1860's when they first arrived on Sodar. We are also given a glimpse of the main line before the Fat Controller and an engine called Neil. The old even has a Victorian design on the cover.

Book No 21 - Despite it's title this book is mainly set on Edward's Branch Line. A new diesel is introduced, Bo-Co and 2 industrial tank engines, Bill & Ben, who are twins and are owned by the Sodor China Clay Company.

Book No 22 - A new railway, The Small Railway, a new controller, The Small Controller, 3 new engines, Bert, Rex & Mike, and Fat & Thin Clergymen are all introduced. The Thin Clergyman is in fact the Author. Also seen in this book is Ballast cleaner, the only non-human charterer to wear glasses!

Enterprising Engines



Book 23 - My personal favourite of the series. Plenty of new characters. The most famous of all steam trains comes visiting his brother Gordon, The Flying Scotsman. 2 new diesels, D199, "Spamcan" leaves & D7102 "Bear" stays. Oliver, his coach Isabel & breakvan Toad escape being scrapped on "The Other Railway" with the help of Douglas.

Oliver The Western Engine



Book No 24 - This book is set on the newly opened "Duck's Branch Line" which connects the Main Line to the Small Railway. Two nasty new characters are introduced, A private owner truck called S.C.Ruffy and a double decker bus who wants to scrapped the railways and turn them into roads, Bulgy. Both get their comeuppance.

Duke The Lost Engine



Book No 25 - Sir Handel & Peter Sam used to work on another line on Sodor before it was closed down and they were sold to the Little Railway. This book tells the stories of that line. Sir Handel was called Falcon then and Peter Sam, Stuart. The was also another engine who was left in his shed after the line, parts of which are now part of the Small Railway, Duke. As the shed become overgrown with plants it was lost and the final story tells have the Small Controller and the Fat and Thin Clergyman find Duke to start a new life with his old friends on the Little Railway. Also in this book we meet No. 2 who was turned into a mine water pump.

Book No 26. The final book of the Railway Series by The Rev. W. Awdry. This book is set on Thomas' branch line and we meet an industrial Diesel engine who works for the Ffarquhar Quarry Company, called Mavis, who makes life awkward for Toby.

Therefore is seems only right The Reverend's son Christopher first book of the series is called Really Useful Engines. Christopher Awdry, of course, was the little boy that the very first books of the had original been written for.

Book No 31 - Gordon wants to be a High Speed Train but things don't as planned. However he does get to run on the other railway, in the meantime 2 Inter-City 125 power units called Pip & Emma visit the Fat Controller's Railway.

Toby, Trucks And Trouble



Book 32 - Mavis has an accident leaving extra work for Toby & Percy. In the book Toby remembers a time when he used to work for the LNER. In the story we see one of Toby's brothers, LNER No 8783 (this engine used to pull The Royal Train in real life) and an un-named black LNER engine. We also meet an disagreeable barge called Bulstrode.

Book No 34 - A trip to the Small Railway for this book. We meet a diesel shunter called Frank who wasn't in The Small Railway Engines, having arrived their as the book was published and a newly built engine called Jock, named by Douglas as his colour reminds him of the "Jock" engines in Scotland.

Book No 35 - Thomas goes to The National Railway Museum and get a parking ticket along the way. Meets a number of engines from the museum. The story of Trouble On The Line was about Railway safety but apparently was watered down somewhat by the publishers.

Book No 36 - This book is a prime example of the publishers insisting on a book with Thomas in the title. In fact the book isn't about Thomas at all, it's about events on his branch line whilst he was in York at the NRM. In fact Thomas only appears on the last page and doesn't say a word.

Wilbert The Forest Engine



Book No. 38. Wilbert is a real Engine from the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire and is names after The Rev. W. Awdry, who was President of the Railway line Wilbert runs on. In this book The Fat Controller borrows Wilbert is see if his class of engine is suitable to work on his railway as he needs a new engine due to increased work-load on Duck's Branch line.

Book No. 39. This book celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first book "The Three Railway Engines" in 1945. The Fat Controller's line receives a royal visit but things didn't quite go as planned thanks to a spider's web.

Book No 42. The final book of The Railway Series and a book that marks the 100th birthday of The Rev. Wilbert Awdry. The book is dedicated to Wilbert Awdry. This book is the only book that references an Electric Line that runs to the Mountain Railway. Unlike all other books of the series this book finishes on the last page "The End" which may mean Christopher Awdry will not write any other Railway Series Books.
