annaloog 10th May 2022		Book W. S. Gilbert - The "Bab" Ballads (1916)	23skidoo - It's my understanding that Don Martin was a member of the NY Gilbert & Sullivan appreciation society, so its appearance in MAD was likely his idea.

Gilbert - The "Bab" Ballads (1916)	Gilbert's poem, "Etiquette" (concerning two shipwreck survivors cast up on a desert island), was reprinted in MAD Magazine several decades ago, with illustrations by Don Martin. As I recall (I no longer have the copy), the first stanza goes ... The Ballyshannon! foundered off the coast of Cariboo, And down in fathoms many went the Captain and the crew. Down went the owners, greedy men, whom hope of gain allured — Ah! dry the starting tear, for they were heavily insured.
annaloog 8th May 2022		Book Tim Powers - On Stranger Tides (1988)	Supposedly, the inspiration for one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films (?) Genre dropdown for 'historical fiction' is not available, but the plot is more-or-less loosely based on the career of Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard).
annaloog 6th May 2022		Book Fletcher Pratt - Invaders From Rigel (1964)	ppint - This is one of a couple hundred or so interesting-looking books I bought cheap at the time, to save for my retirement . Now I've scanned it, it shouldn't be before long I'll get to read it. Judging from the back cover teaser, though, I'm not too hopeful about the plot. Still, I won't mind if I'm pleasantly surprised. Heh, I recall attending a symphony fund-raiser way back in the 1980s, and accumulating an armload of late '40s-early '50s paperbacks; they are somewhere in that retirement stack.

Unfortunately the cover has a corner clipped; on the bright side, the price was cheap enough. If this is a 1976 printing, it seems odd that the cover does not have an ISBN. mod edit: images moved to (linked) later printing
annaloog 2nd May 2022		Book Jack Vance - The Last Castle (1982)	One of the 'better' Vance cover illustrations (IMO), depicting the castle, the siege, the Teks, and the birds; presumably the artist could not show the high cliffs ... unfortunately my copy is marred by a crease.
