nelson doubleday imprint h/cvr first printing bears the printer's gutter code of I06 on p.247
later printings' gutter codes include I36 9/78, K06 2/80, K12 3/80, M31 8/82
these are not necessarily exhaustive even through 8/1982, and i've no idea whether there's anyone still around as can explain the system - i've certainly no inside knowledge of it.

somewhat oddly, perhaps, the smaller second element of the bar-code & number, 62299, encodes the canadian cover price in cents rather than the uk cover price in pence. i've no idea of the reason for this.
when david & charles ltd. bought the readers union group of bookclubs from j. m. dent & sons ltd, 1/1972, they started a new sequence of cat#s that the books do not seem to've borne, in the 1000 range.
1/1973 they re-cat#ed the in-print stock of the science fiction book club alphabetically by title in the 5000 series, from 5001 ''age of the pussyfoot, the'' onwards, with ''firemantle'' being allocated cat# 5016, through 5067 ''worlds of robert f. young, the'', and continued to catalogue number new monthly sfbc choices on from there.
(this renumbering is now almost completely theoretical, as sfaik the books themselves did not ever bear these later cat#s, but is noted here, ''just in case''. . .)
