hannah shapero's cover art is retained through (at least) the daw books 11th mmpb printing, but is shrunk somewhat and heavily cropped from the ninth printing (11/1988 from locus) onward, so as to fit within the frame designed and painted by richard hescox for daw books' uniform darkover edition.

Book
Terry Pratchett - The Colour Of Magic (1993)
this was a first attempt to try selling the discworld books to ''non fantasy-readers'' and any others who might've been put off by josh kirby's idiosyncratically and highly spiritedly atmospheric and immensely successfully eye-catching - but undeniably somewhat garish - covers.

the sales velocity of this printing° did not compare well with those bearing josh kirby's art, and it was not reprinted. c. 15,800 copies printed and distributed by transworld publishers ltd.

John Carnell - New Writings In Sf16 (1970)
*nods* - so it was a bit rich for one of the "new worlds gang" to put down "traditional" sf as old-fashioned & boring, when you consider that, the odd arts council grant aside, the primary finance of new worlds post- roberts & vinter were the advances michael moorcock received from granada publishing, allison & busby and the like for his interminable° trilogies of trilogies piled ever higher and higher, until they toppled willy-nilly into an inconsistent, incoherent multiverse. . .

° - but commercially successful - the granada publishing mayflower, then granada, later grafton (and eventually harpercollinspublishers) & namara group quartet books uk p/bs and the berkley publishing group & lancer books mmpbs are still around on secondhand bookstalls and in charity shops...

Lucy A. Snyder - Spellbent (2009)
#1 of the spellbent trilogy:

#1: "spellbent" (2009), (this book)
#2: "shotgun sorceress" (2010), q.v.
#3: "switchblade goddess" (2012), q.v.

"what dwells within" (novelette) in "shadowed souls" eds. jim butcher, kerrie l. hughes (2016), q.v. is apparently set in the spellbent world; i've no idea when it occurs by the series' internal chronology

John Carnell - New Writings In Sf16 (1970)
it'd be worth noting by whom the review published in new worlds was written:
the magazine was by then a flag-waver for "the new wave" and for "speculative fiction", and rather prone to get very sniffy about perfectly good "traditional" sf that did not adhere to their - somewhat ironically - rather narrow definitions of what "speculative fiction" was, or ought to be - or, was simply written by the "wrong (/wrong kind of) writers".
