ppint. 8th Jun 2023 | | BookBasil Dawson - Dan Dare On Mars (1956) | there was a luck of the legion novel in the first (iirc only, or first of only two), release(s) by hulton press of their hardcover eagle novels series; as i find further details of this - and any of the others, as and when yr hmbl srppnt. comes across copies; and if they come back to mind - i'll add them.
all i can currently recall is there was a storm nelson novel, a jack o'lantern novel and one other - but i cannot remember what, nor of which of which ongoing eagle comic hero. i'm pretty sure there were only four or eight novels, in near-uniform, largely yellow-fronted with black typography superimposed upon a much fainter large red ''eagle'' emblem, unique cover art across the top ~33⅓% of the uniform d-j design.
there were some nf titles too; but i don't remember aught about them at all, except they did not share the novels' uniform design.
(edit: after a while digging: i've now traced two jack o'lantern novels, georgian england-set in the time of highwaymen and the like; yr hmbl srppnt. enjoyed his stories in the comic; and that the fourth of the first release quartet was a three j's school-set novel; but i don't remember them from eagle comic at all...)
i am, however, absolutely positive that there wasn't another dan dare novel in this short series.

ppint. 6th Jun 2023 | | BookManning Lee Stokes - Cold Blue Death (1977) | this is the 1977 mmpb reissue of this novel by manor books and its date should be corrected to this
it was a 1970 macfadden books mmpb title; this manor books mmpb was likely printed essentially from the same typesetting, suitably emended;
manor books did not exist in 1970: it was the successor publisher set up to absorb all the book publishing (possibly all their magazine side as well) interests and properties of the mini-conglomerate of macfadden bartell, inc. - primarily macfadden books so far as i'm aware.
manor books began publishing in 1972 and ceased publishing sf&f in 1980, closing down in 1981.

ppint. 4th Jun 2023 | | BookRichard Hescox - The Deceiving Eye (2004) | paper tiger / dragon's world went bust, or very nearly so, and were bought by collins brown (yr hmbl srppnt. does not know if these were then independent), who voluntarily started paying the paper tiger books-published artists money owed by the owners of the previous incarnation;
this confused josh kirby at least twice over, as no-one'd kept him abreast of the ongoing ''situation'' - nor, therefore, that the new owners almost certainly weren't under any legal obligation to pay him any of the royalties outstanding when they bought the remaining assets.
it cheered him up considerably when i explained this and similar, and advised him to re-contact his agent to open correspondence with the (then) new owners.
(i've tried finding any current on-line presence of paper tiger/dragons world/dragons dream publishers or imprints again a couple of times this year, and so far failed.)

there should have been a vlf card-covered bind-up of carcasses from the same print-run, but yr hmbl srppnt. does not know if this occurred. nor am i actually certain who owned anova books at the time, which got increasingly fraught for me, and distracted me from matters such as this, and quite a lot of other things, besides.

ppint. 2nd Jun 2023 | | BookWilliam Godwin - Caleb Williams (1966) | borderline fantasy only; no single element is identifiable as fantasy, but the over-all effect is nightmarish.
william godwin (1756-1836) was a philosopher, political philosopher and biographer, author inter alia of ''an enquiry into political justice'' (1793, revised 1796), q.v., which concludes that all political institutions are ultimately incompatible with serving humanity truthfully and accurately.
''st. leon: a tale of the sixteenth century'' (1799), q.v, is an interesting twist on the wandering jew legend, with further fantastical elements such as a functional philosophers' stone, and a phial of truly immortality-conferring elixir of life, not to mention the final twist in which redacted (to avoid spoilerage).
william godwin also wrote children's (and some adult) fiction published as by ''edward baldwin'', q.v.
