WPLives 17th Jul 2024		Book Don Strack - Diesels Of The Union Pacific 1934-1982 (1999)	The first volume of the most complete roster/pictorial book published to date about Union Pacific's diesel locomotive fleet. This two-volume set covers builder's data and dispositions for each unit in UP's diesel-electric and turbine locomotives, as well as a varied selection of photographs detailing each model, from the early Pullman articulated trains and early EMC E units and giant GE-built gas turbines to the varied EMD SD40-2 fleet that moved transcontinental freight into the 1980s. This book has 224 pages; 308 black and white photographs; abbreviated bibliography; 14-page 1934-1982 timeline of Union Pacific diesel locomotives; four-page summary of road numbers, with years in service; four-page summary of locomotive model quantities; 40-page history of Union Pacific dieselization; 153-page unit-by-unit roster of Union Pacific diesel and turbine locomotives numbered from 1 to 999. WPLives 15th Jul 2024		Book Diesel Era Magazine - Union Pacific's Big EMDs (2012)	After testing EMD’s GP35-DD35-DD35-GP35 demonstrator set, Union Pacific was so pleased with the design that it almost immediately ordered an additional 25 DD35s and 22 matching GP35s, which were delivered between May and August 1964. These joined the four-unit demonstrator set previously acquired by the carrier. As with UP’S earlier experiences with cabless booster units, the lack of flexibility of these massive, mainline-only units soon became apparent, and a planned follow-on order for 15 units was changed from booster units to 15 units with fully equipped cabs – the DDA35 was born. The Centennials were the final example of Union Pacific’s search for the ideal locomotive. While the road pursued a study of its motive power needs in late 1967 and early 1968, UP in March 1968 tried, as a stopgap measure, using EMD’s SD45 model as a high-horsepower, high-speed locomotive, but with limited success. UP returned to the concept of double-engine locomotives and in a collaboration between the railroad and EMD, the DDA40X came to life. Within 13 months of an initial March 1968 communication, the railroad and the builder had worked out a definitive design, and the first unit was delivered. The timing of the first unit coincided with the 100th anniversary of the May 10, 1869, ceremony marking the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah – the DDA40X quickly became known as the Centennial. It was numbered 6900, and 46 more examples arrived over the next 28 months. This 128-page, 8-1/2x11-inch vertical-format perfect-bound (softcover) book covers these monsters with more than 130 black-and-white and 170 color photos, as well as diagrams.

Signor - Southern Pacific's Salt Lake Division (2007)	While many segments of the vast Southern Pacific have attracted wide attention over the years, the lines of the SP in Nevada and Utah have remained largely a mystery. The stretch from Sparks, Nevada, to Ogden, Utah, was for many years known as the Salt Lake Division. This Volume is an attempt to trace the long and colorful history of the Southern Pacific Railroad through Nevada and Utah, starting with the pioneer Central Pacific in the 1860s, and continuing on with the vibrant Harriman years after 1900, through Depression and War, and on into the modern era. Over the years, terminals and railroad towns were built, and many later faded into history. Engineering and operating challenges were overcome. Throughout, the traffic, trains and people of the Salt Lake Division continued to change, and all left their mark in some way in the shifting sands and wind-blown passes of this lonely land. This Volume is by noted Southern Pacific authority John Signor. As with all his SP historical works, the coverage is thorough and detailed, with many specifics drawn from operating personnel. Signor has created an original oil painting for the dust jacket and frontispiece.

Signor - The Los Angeles And Salt Lake Railroad Company (1988)	Fascinating and lavishly illustrated history of the Los Angles and Salt Lake Railroad, the Union Pacific's Salt Lake Route. The author, a noted railroad historian, traces the line from its origins as the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad under Sen. William A. Clark. The book provides a detailed look at the construction of this and predecessor lines, the extension into Utah's Tintic mining district, construction across the great American desert, trackage rights from the Santa Fe over Cajon Pass, purchase of the Los Angeles Terminal, and establishment of the famed Los Angeles Limited. E.H. Harriman's role in obtaining a 50% interest in the line and the eventual merger into UP are described, as are the battles with floods in the Meadow Valley Wash and Afton Canyon, freight and passenger operations, dispatching and signaling problems, early dieselization due to water shortages, the Mission style stations, tunnels, bridges, shops and physical plant. Also covered are service to Zion, Bryce, Cedar Breaks and the Grand Canyon, development of the desert helper district, the discovery of oil on Terminal Island, the coming of the streamliners, branch line operations, electrification of the Glendale line, the effect of World War II, and the arrival of CTC, Piggyback and container service, and the Day Live Stock service. All the locomotives are on view -- steam and diesels of every kind, Centennials, U-50s, SD-40s and experimental turbines. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos and a few color photos. With numerous maps, timetables. 256 pages.

WPLives 27th May 2024		Book Chard Walker - Chard Walker's Cajon (2007)	Completion of a rail route over Cajon Pass, by the California Southern Railroad, was accomplished in November, 1885. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe had backed construction of the California Southern, and by 1906 would absorb it into the Santa Fe. Meanwhile, in 1905 the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad began using the pass under trackage rights; the SPLA&SL would later become part of the Union Pacific system. The ruling grade of 2.2% on the west side of the pass (originally 3%) required helper locomotives from the beginning; usually they were turned at Summit. Even the east side, with a ruling grade of 1.6%, can be an operating challenge. In 1967, Southern Pacific completed its own route over Cajon Pass, also with a ruling grade of 2.2%. The construction and particularly the operation of this line are presented in some detail in this book. Included are chapters on weather, runaways, helper operations, and life at Summit, together with a foreword by Don Sims. Numerous recollections by railroaders and railfans who were there further enrich the book. Supplementing the text are 11 fine maps by John Signor, and some 334 photos (25 in color). A bibliography and index round out this volume. The result is an atmospheric and quite complete look at one of the busiest and most dramatic railroad passes in America, from an author well suited to tell the story. Railroad history buffs generally, and Santa Fe fans in particular, will be sure to enjoy this book. The author, a legendary operator for years at the Summit depot at the top of Cajon Pass, has drawn upon original railroad records, his own extensive experiences, and the recollections of old-timers to create this interesting railroad narrative. Long out of print, the return of this classic railroad account is welcome to historians and fans of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and especially Santa Fe.

The first part of this book details the development, design and running of the train, detailing the engineering and design innovations it featured. The balance of the book is a real life thriller -- the derailment, the deaths and miraculous rescues, and the thorough investigation of who could have committed such a cruel act. SP cooperated with the author in the hopes that revealing the information that had been collected over the years might trigger an answer but the case still remains open. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos that show the train in all its beauty, the wreck and the various clues that were recovered. With maps and diagrams. 188 pages.

I remember piggybacks and I wonder where in the world one would have to go not to find an intermodal container? The author introduces the book with comments about just how enormous of a task it would be to write a full history of the subjects, and ends the book with a large bibliography of sources, as well as the sidebar Finding train information. This book is full of photographs and other graphics. The text is very detailed and yet easy to follow.
