second line in notes section is wrong and should be corrected or just deleted.
the number-string quoted is not an sbn.
an sbn is defined as having nine digits: the publisher code and book identifier (not necessarily identical with the cat#) followed by the checksum digit° derived from the previous eight digits according to a fairly simple strict mathematical calculation, to give the nine digit sbn.
° - which checksum digit may be used to spot errors in recording a book's sbn, and even to identify when two digits in the number have been accidentally swapped.
not all american publishers were convinced immediately of the benefits of adopting the sbn system, and there was also - for a while - a rival abn (american book number) system which did not employ a checksum digit, which may have been cheaper for the publishers to use than the sbn system, and whose assigned publisher codes were not defined to be compatible with those of the sbn standard book number system. yr hmbl srppnt. does not know very much at all about the abn system, but the ace books publisher code, for example, was ''020-''.
the sbn system was later extended into the isbn - international standard book number - system, initially by prepending the digit ''0'' to the sbn - which did not affect that checksum digit's value - and defining this ''0'' to indicate books published in the english language (an initial ''1'' was further reserved for the english language), with other initial digits and groups of digits identifying other languages - ''3'' for example identifying german (deutsch).
the isbn system was in turn extended in the early 21st century c.e. into the isbn13 system, designed to be compatible across many industries' retail (& wholesale) products, initially by prepending ''978-'' to the first nine digits of the previously-issued isbn10 (the old isbn retrospectively so-named), identifying ''book'', and recalculating the checksum digit according to a new defined mathematical calculation.
(the checksum digit of the isbn13 reveals errors in recording isbn13s, but does not identify which two digits have been transposed, if this be the error made.) (this comment is from another edition of this book)
