ppint. 20th Aug 2018		second block of bar-code number truncated by too-small field: 978044651428651895 - last four digits being the cover price in cents. first edition of this classic novel which was then mmpb-ed by warner books in three popular library / questar volumes despite this being contrary to the terms of their license: #1: "cyteen: the betrayal" (1989), q.v. #2: "cyteen: the rebirth" (1989), q.v. #3: "cyteen: the vindication" (1989), q.v. after some reprintings, further merkin p/b editions were in single volume trade paperback (tp/b).

ppint. 22nd Nov 2021		Rated 10/10 hugo award-winning novel voted best science fiction novel of the year 1988 by the members of the 1989 world science fiction convention. ariane emory, highly respected, one of the most powerful people in resuene - and therefore, in the union, leading socio-political theoretical and practical scientist behind the development, production, education and (some) socialisation of the ''azi'', the ''bottle'' or ''test-tube'' clones who've provided the man- - and woman- - power for union's successful revolt against rule from light years away - and years, even decades behind the times - earth company, and earth company's fleet - and for the absolute requirement that all azi education, socialisation, including military, ''tape'' programming be supervised and controlled by reseune - - feared by some - and hated - perhaps by even more - - ariane emory is working late in an old, familiar lab with its known faulty door propped open, to compensate for its failing heating, and with known inadequate security because of its age - - and is discovered in the morning frozen to death, with the faulty door slammed shut - but also with a bad head wound sufficient to've knocked her unconscious. - was it an accident ? - if so, it was remarkably convenient for her political and business competitors and enemies, inside reseune as well as outside, and for her personal enemies, too - one of whom is known to have visited her that evening, and argued vehemently with her... - was it the accidental outcome of this vehement argument's becoming literally violent - or, with the known suspect's storming out unaware that by letting the door slam shut, he was condemning her to a slow freezing to death, in the course of which she got up, fell, and accidentally knocked herself out? - or was it out and out murder ? - and whichever it was, can reseune retain its power - even survive - without her insight, her ability, and without her clear-sighted steering - or, as her rivals and political opponents within and without reseune might prefer to term it, her bloody-minded dictatorial and domineering directorship of reseune - can the company that is the heart of union, and the dominant power on cyteen, steering the union's politics and colonisation programmes always in the progressive - or ''expansionist'' - directions that also - purely incidentally, of course - ensure reseune's continued domination of the union's policies, budget and politics - can reseune and even the union survive ? ppint. 22nd Nov 2021		warner books aspect sf series, or sub-imprint, trade p/b edition, first merkin single-volume p/b edition not first single-volume p/b edition (was new english library / hodder & stoughton uk 1989) cover art by keith birdsong (credited) cover price $14.99 680pp. including titles, indicia etc. at least eight^W eleven undated re-printings, with cover price rising to $15.95 ($18.99 in canada); and with/by eighth printing, $15.95 ($21.95 canada) ninth printing through twelfth printing: refer to indicia publishing history printing number line to see which printing is held, as digits are dropped progressively with each additional printing: e.g. 10 9 8 indicates eighth printing; printing number line range changes to up to 20 as printing number transcends 10 with/by the eighth printing, the relative isbn13 (978-0-446-67127-9) is added, so this must've been printed c. 2001-2 (c.2002-3 ?) rather a strange choice of topic/subject for the photographically realistic cover art of two young men's faces (? or different aspects of one man's - ?°) opposed across a fanciful technological representation of part of a helical double dna strand; ° - though this does reflect two (or three!) significant threads - or strands - in this major novel, it completely ignores the central character, who is a girl, and a young woman, and, at the start of the story, a mature woman and a - the - dominant person in reseune: and a major power in the union as a whole, in consequence. (this comment is from another edition of this book)



ppint. 21st Nov 2021		hodder & stoughton new english library imprint ~b-format p/b printing, first single-volume p/b edition, first uk edition bar-code number truncated by too-small field: 9780450500682 90499 cover art unsigned, uncredited cover price £4.99, $10.95 r.r.p. australia 688pp. including eight unpaginated pp. titles, indicia, b+w maps; no additional end pp. n.b. hodder & stoughton didn't even bother to add a strap-line or a flash to the front cover advertising that this superb novel had won the hugo award for the best science fiction novel of its year. . . (despite having the option on her next work, we (i.e. abp / methuen london) lost this in the bidding ''war'' as hodder & stoughton's offer of an advance against royalties went over £100,000 - yr hmbl srppnt. doesn't now remember the figure elsbeth advised me at which the auction ended; - and despite this sky-high advance, hodder didn't bother doing a h/cvr edition! (*<fume!>*°) (° - elsbeth was apologetic - but said it'd already gone way above what it could've earned out in the first printing as a uk methuen sf list p/b when she dropped out of the bidding; but she told me too late for my suggestion of a qualitatively* different counter-offer to be made: to raise the royalty rate on future reprints of all of her ''back catalogue'' titles - i.e. retrospectively improving earlier rights contracts - and to raise the royalty rate on this book to recognise her excellence and long-term commercial appeal to book-buyers - which would've earned cj more in the medium-and-longer-term, as methuen kept her entire back catalogue-to-which-we-had-uk+commonwealth-etc. rights in print, and to undertake to promote this "backlist" with each year's major new novel by her, in h/cvr, and the previous year's in p/b, & cj as "lead fiction author of the month", and organise & advertise a signing tour if she came over for it... ..to even be put forward for consideration.) (- cj was one of our top four bestselling authors, and methuen/abp should've done far more, to keep her.) (this comment is from another edition of this book)
