ppint. 6th Feb 2019		fourth (date 7/1978 from locus #215, 10/1978), fifth (merkin-), sixth (canadadian-carcassed) 9/1978 (jaffery) and seventh (?date?) printings share merkin-printed covers with new art by carl lundgren (though incorrect indica credit to george barr remains - and is still present in the ninth printing), and cat# UW1407, though the cover prices differ: $1.75 on the canadadian, rather than the $1.50 of the merkin as indicated by the "W" in the cat#. they also pick up the isbn appropriate, 087997-407-9. carl lundgren's cover art is retained through the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth printings. cover redesigned and new art by richard hescox with or by the 5/1992 thirteenth printing, cover price (canada $4.99) u.s. $3.99, cat# UE1968, isbn 0-87997-968-2 (both cat# and isbn suggest these picked up with the (?eleventh? and) twelfth printing 10/1984), printing history number-string 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20; this bears a daw books collectors number under the redesigned DAW monogram logo, but n.b. it's the incorrect no. 70, which properly belongs to the 9/1973 daw books editions/printings of michael g. coney's "the hero of downways", q.v.
ppint. 21st Nov 2018		n.b. copies with merkin-printed carcasses indica printing history number-string given as the third printing, 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 whilst canadadian-carcassed copies (dated 4/1974 by jaffery) indicate second printing, 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 the daw books collectors number is dropped from the shared merkin-printed cover. the sequel is "the survivors" marion zimmer bradley and paul edwin zimmer (1979), q.v. reference copy provided courtesy of tony at the old pier bookshop, morecambe seafront.
