ppint. 8th Sep 2019		450025179 was the export edition book's sbn - the nine-digit precursor to the ten digit isbn. the checksum digit calculation was kept identical when the isbn was introduced by prepending it with a zero as the first english language identifier code (the identifier number "1" also indicates english - but this range was not needed immediately). new english library didn't account their export edition p/bs as printings of their uk editions. some publishers moved swiftly to the sbn system, obtaining numbers incorporating their existing privately-created cat#s; some, including new english library ltd., either used a mixture of such and completely new sbn#s; and some either ignored the sbn system, at least for a while, or decided they had no use for these systematic unique cat#s - or, in some cases, any need for cat#s at all (e.g. world distributors (manchester) ltd. for their ensign books and five star books). some, mostly merkin publishers ime, created fake sbn#s & fake isbn#s at least for a while (e.g. norden publications, inc. especially on their leisure books mmpbs). some merkin mmpb publishers used a non-systemic halfway house, combining their issued i/sbn publisher identifier number, their privately-created cat# and appending a three digit number giving the cover price in cents. there was a merkin abn system rival to the sbn, that was incompatible with it and does not seem to've used a checksum digit. i know very little about the american book number.



OldMod67 8th Sep 2019		Incidentally, apart from the ISBN quirk mentioned this 'July 1975' edition also boasts 'A major motion picture' corner flash and film image cover photos; no further printing updates listed, but the film was released in November 1976.
