daw imprint mass-market paperback first printing, first edition
published by daw books, inc.
donald a. wollheim, publisher
1301 avenue of the americas, new york, n. y. 10019 (usa)
collection of three witch world/high hallack stories, two novellas separated by a short story:
"dragon scale silver", "dream smith", "amber out of quayth", not previously published.
cover art and b+w frontispiece & illustration on p.26 by jack gaughan (signed)
cat# is given on base of spine, and incidentally in p.160 advert.
almost-meaningless daw books no. (later, collectors no.) 1 given in front cover price box.
cover price 95¢
192pp. including titles, indicia, table-of-contents etc, end pp. advertising
may well exist in near-identical printing/edition sharing merkin-printed covers, with canadadian-printed book carcass, given as first printing in the indicia, but later accounted as daw books' second printing.
near-identical fourth printing by indicia publishing history number line:
4 5 6 7 8 9 10
cover price 95¢
p.160 advertising goes up to cat# UQ1075 & UQ1076, both published october 1973;
hence the date of (october or) november 1973 the inferred publication date for this printing.
#1: "witch world" (1963), q.v. for series & sub-series listing, and links
cat# is^W was wrong; prior to adding/moving over to isbn10s, daw's new american library (later became merkin penguin group) distribution used a modification of their single-letter price codes prefixed with "U" for all daw books cat#s:
UT = 75¢, UQ = 95¢, UY = $1.25, UW = $1.50, UE = $1.75, UJ = $1.95, UE (again) = $2.25, then UE = $2.50 and higher (the price-code letter system broke down or was abandoned on daw books (with the near-universal spread of bar-codes & readers?), as on signet books, as no longer required).
n.b. in the period daw mmpbs distributed in canada were priced differently from the simultaneous merkin-distributed edition, on merkin-printed covers that differ only in their cover price, the new american library price code letter was not changed to indicate the canadadian cover price.
i do not know why not.
(the "daw books" "collector number" is almost meaningless: not all daw books were allocated them, and some reprints of books that originally were, had them changed or lost them completely upon subsequent reprinting.)
cover art by michael whelan (prob'ly miscredited to jack gaughan)
b+w frontispiece by jack gaughan retained
near-meaningless daw book collectors number dropped from cover
cover price $1.25
indicia publishing history number line 5 6 7 8 9 10
160pp. including titles, indicia etc, end p. advertising
but a fifth printing is also reported as retaining cover art by jack gaughan: one report may be mistaken - or, daw books publishing history accounting of canadadian- and merkin- printed printings is known to've gone haywire upon occasions.
simultaneous near-identical sixth printing shares merkin-printed covers, and hence cat#,
cover art by michael whelan (miscredited to jack gaughan still in indicia)
b+w frontispiece by jack gaughan retained
cover price $1.25
indicia publishing history number line 6 7 8 9 10
carcass of book canadadian-printed
160pp. including titles, indicia etc, end p. advertising
near-identical seventh, eighth and ninth printings credit michael whelan correctly
cover price $1.25 also retained. (this comment is from another edition of this book)
w. h. allen/howard & wyndham wyndham books universal imprint p/b first printing, tandem books p/b second printing over-all
collection of three high hallack (witch world) stories::two novellas and one short story
cover art by rodney matthews (unsigned, uncredited; collected in "in search of forever" rodney matthews (1985), q.v.)
cover price 75p, 80c malta, $2.65 australia, $2.30 new zealand
so should be re-flagged "international" according to respected moderator's rule
or not so re-flagged, according to equally well-respected moderator's heartfelt plea
176pp. including titles, indicia etc.
rodney matthews painted the covers for this 1978 uk p/b and the 1978 matching reprintings of the tandem books mixed witch world/high hallack "set"): four appeared as universal imprint p/bs, one as a 1979 star imprint p/b, and three did not appear on any w. h. allen/howard & wyndham group imprint p/b at all. the eight paintings are reproduced and attributed on andre-norton.com
strap-line (n.b. not a sub-title) states witch world series no.7, but this is really high hallack sub-series #3:
witch world main series #7 is "'ware hawk" (1983), q.v.
main series #1: "witch world" (1963), q.v. for series and sub-series listings, and links. (this comment is from another edition of this book)
the publisher name should^W has been changed to "universal",
as this imprint of the publisher, w. h. allen & co.'s paperback division, wyndham publications, is already given as just "universal" on multiple titles here on "bookcat".
(the uk p/b publisher was originally set up by universal publishing & distribution, inc. (upd) as universal-tandem publishing co. ltd., to publish their mass-market paperbacks and sf and fantasy digest-format magazines in the uk-of-gb-and-norn-iron, republic of ireland, western yeurrrp and anywhere else within the sterling area or block as used to be. this rapidly expanded to include books universal-tandem picked up the uk (etc.) p/b rights to, which were published under their tandem books and target books (for children; mostly doctor who novelisations) imprints. the primary uk distribution of the magazines, galaxy, if, worlds of fantasy and worlds of tomorrow was by new english library magazine division until this part of that publisher was closed down; thereafter distribution was by universal-tandem/tandem books.
at some point the universal-tandem publishing co. ltd. name was changed to tandem books ltd.
upd sold their uk book-publishing arm to w. h. allen & co. ltd., by then a howard & wyndham company, who combined distribution etc. with their star books p/b line, possibly retaining the licence to continue to use the "tandem" name for only a limited time, as wyndham publications. they later started transferring many tandem books titles to their star books imprint, giving the impression they intended to close down the tandem books imprint - but nevertheless also published some new titles as tandem books...
they began re-labelling reprintings of various tandem books as universal books, with new cover designs and art (and prices), as well as publishing new titles under the universal imprint...
the continuity of the variously-named publishing company can be traced from cat#s through cat#-incorporating sbn9s with publisher code 426-, isbn10s incorporating this in the extended prefix 0-426- and eventually the associated bar-code numbers.
(the star/tandem/target/universal/wyndham/savoy books°/warner paperback library°/signet°/etc. a4 catalogue-cum-order form was a mess, too. . .)
(and at least one tandem books title reprint rebadged a star book accidentally retained its 0426-prefixed tandem books isbn instead of havng an 0352-prefixed star books (& w. h. allen) isbn bestowed upon it.)
.
(° - wyndham publications/w. h. allen & co. ltd. distributed some titles from these independent publishers' catalog(ue)s at various times) (this comment is from another edition of this book)
n.b. copies of (at least) the near-identical (with the two first) third printing of the merkin daw UQ1001 mmpb edition with nel black on white 30p "tall oval with porticoed door" stickers were distributed in the uk by new english library in/from 1972.
