this is not an edition of the novel, ''the hobbit'' by j. r. r. tolkien (1937 and later emended editions):
it is a graphic novel based upon tolkien's book, and should be clearly differentiated from it;
and it was first published in one volume in 1990.
i would - do! - suggest the addition of '' (graphic novel)'' to the title field, to give:
''the hobbit (graphic novel)''
(&, in the first published field: 1990)
would be the simplest and clearest way of doing this.
one volume graphic novel adaptation of j. r. r. tolkien's novel, ''the hobbit'', by charles dixon, sean deming (text), david (aka ''dave'') wenzell (artwork: paintings iiuc)
originally published by eclipse comics in three parts, each in printed card covers:
volume one in august 1989, volume two listed online as in april 1990, volume three as in august 1990;
but the latter two dates clash with the january 1990 date for the first edition of this graphic novel:
collected in the one volume graphic novel, again in printed card covers, by eclipse comics january 1990.
uk & commonwealth edition published in some imprint of unwin hyman, after their sale to william collins sons, or to harpercollinspublishers (who took over william collins sons in 1990) in 1990, possibly in h/cvr as well as the softcover edition.
i'll try to find my copy of the one volume graphic novel and provide fuller details of it this year; i stocked it in IMT in lancaster, inititially in the three issue de luxe comic format, then as the eclipse graphic novel, and ultimately in one of the harpercollinspublishers uk editions.
harpercollinspublishers continued to produce further reprintings of the uk edition after the bankruptcy of eclipse comics in the states, and it may well be in print still - this would be worth checking - in some edition. they re-covered a later printing or edition with new cover art, but this would have been in c.2000 at the earliest iirc.
More detail: Illustrated by David Wenzel. Adapted by Charles Dixon, with Sean Deming.
First published in three comic volumes by Eclipse, 1989. One volume edition, also by Eclipse, followed in January 1990. First one volume edition in UK by Unwin, 1990.
