Notes

First edition. Written by Dorst from an idea by Abrams, but Abrams is credited as co-author. Consists of a fictional novel entitled Ship of Theseus by "V. M. Straka" which is made up to look like an old library book (complete with library filing code sticker on spine), with the story with the book augmented by handwritten notes and inserted ephemera between the pages. Initially old in a cardboard slipcase on which publication details are printed and the authors are credited on a sticker that wraps around the front of the box to hold the book in; the book itself only "breaks character" on the inside back cover where the book's normal copyright page would be placed is instead a fake one based upon the fictional book publisher listed as Winged Shoes Press and a publication year of 1949. Second publisher credited: Melcher Media and the book was also associated with Bad Robot. 458 pages, plus ephemera pieces.

23skidoo 19th Aug 2020		Definitely one of the more unique books in my collection. If the book itself is ever separated from its box, it'll be tricky to identify its origins before seeing the fine print on the inside back cover. The only thing that gives the "Straka" book away as being a replica is it's in far too good a condition for a library book from 1949. I did not enter V. M. Straka as a pen name as that's not how this book works, and Abrams/Dorst are credited on the primary packaging (Straka is more a "character"). I considered having Dorst as main author and Abrams as secondary co-author but the book's packaging and online listings treat the two equally. But if someone wants to adjust how Abrams is listed, I have no objections.
